These days we are bombarded with hundreds, if not thousands of supplement advertisements daily. It seems as if there is a pill, a potion, or a powder for whatever ails you. Unfortunately many of these supplements are expensive and ineffective in fulfilling the claims they make. During my time at my alma mater, we researched a ton of ergogenic aids and their efficacy. One that is pertinent to the weekend warrior, everyday athlete, and also the motocross athlete – post exercise recovery supplements. There are several drinks made by GU, Powerbar, and a few other athlete-focused companies. They are designed to replenish the sugars that are burned during intense exercise and to provide the proper building blocks (proteins) to rebuild muscle. These products have shown to be effective in facilitating these processes however, there is one issue, the price. Endurox and Accelerade are two products for post-exercise recovery and range from 25-35 dollars a container, with around 28 servings per container. Let’s just round that to roughly $1/serving, That doesn’t seem too terribly expensive when compared to some other supplements.
What if I told you that there was another product on the market at half of the price/serving, tastes (in my opinion) much better, is equally effective as these other products and can be found at your local gas station? Now that I have your attention here is the product: chocolate milk. Yes, your standard pre-made chocolate moo juice has shown to be just as effective as these high dollar supplements. 16 oz of this delicious elixir post exercise provides your body with a bevy of nutrients to accelerate you down the road to recovery. Just to toot my horn and add some fruit on my tree about this topic I would also like to inform you that one of my professors at CWU did her own original research on the topic and found the same conclusions. So next time instead of driving to the local supplement store for your recovery drink, you can stop at a gas station instead and pick up some chocolate milk.
